Decimal  Concepts and Skills

 1. Decimal notation can be developed as an extension of whole
number place value where the concept of groups of groups pf 10 is

       used.

This time the idea of groups of groups of tenth parts, or tenths of
     tenths, is
  developed.

 2. The pattern is symmetrical about the whole number/decimal point

combined
  place.

 3.  The idea of decimal place value can best be developed using a variety
      of
  models:

                    a. 10 x 10 square defined as one whole one (for tenths and                               hundredths)

                    b. Money (tenths and hundredths) and measurement
                        (metric).

                   c. From the 1/10 family of fractions.

* Using money – can develop notation and the tenths and hundredths.

* A percentage can also easily be converted to a decimal – (e.g.30% is
   0.3)

*   Percentages are all over the place in stores.

* Converting a simple fraction such as ½, ¼, 1/5, 1/10  to a decimal helps

develop the relationship between fractions and decimals.
