Problem Solving
Smart A neat math poem by Shel Silverstein
There are basically two types of mathematical problems at the elementary school level; word problems, and process problems.
In a story problem, the task is to find an operation that will work for solving the problem. When the type of operation (count, add, subtract, multiply, divide) has been determined, the problem becomes an arithmetic or algebraic exercise. Most story problems involve combining, separating or comparing quantities of things. Try these story problems.
With process problems, there is usually no clearly identifiable operation that can be selected to solve the problem. We must use a problem solving strategy such as drawing a picture, making a chart or looking for a pattern. Here are some problem solving strategies and sample process problems.
